*If you have record of tornado related fatalities/injuries please pass it on to me to add to the chart. Information is scanty and few and far between. 2009 for example... definitive numbers are hard to come by. Some injuries/fatalities already tallied may be non-tornadic, but it's difficult to discern with older news reports.

EDIT: UPDATE (section below added Sep.8/2013)

Great statistical maps and data: http://www.yorku.ca/pat/research/dsi..._GLOMW2012.pdf

I've also got it hosted on the server here in case the link above changes:

ORIGINAL REPLY:

54 for the Haldimand/Niagara area isn't bad I guess, considering it's the smallest area on the map. The 172 area has 3X the # of torandos, but it's 3X the size. Would be nice if EC could do equal-size area 'blocks' to show who gets the most according to unit-size of land.

I've got a small one here but it's too small to give any real detail :

Default Re: Southern Ontario Tornadoes: 1918 to Present

There's also been lots of tornadoes EC never knows about. 3 here in Niagara in the last decade that I can recall. One on Hwy.20 in Fonthill where witnesses reported a funnel touching the ground, did extensive damage to a gas station out there. Another going up the Niagara Escarpment that did damage to a dozen or more cars, and ripped apart a construction site. Another that had the write-up on the front page of the newspaper where a professor from Brock U. surveyed the damage to grape crops at a winery stating he saw a distinct swath about 100m wide through it. There's probably been more...

So just remember, those are -confirmed- tornadoes, but EC doesn't go out and confirm everything (but that doesn't mean a tornado didn't occur). They just don't have the resources. Just judging from the # of tornadoes in this area in the last decade, to the # EC has confirmed, I'd go so far as to say the # of actual tornadoes is probably twice as high as the # of confirmed, in the last decade. And of course before that, without doppler, people shooting video, etc... that # is far far higher, especially the further you go back towards 1918.

Surprisingly, almost every year of the last 10 or so there have been and still are several tornadoes that were not publicly confirmed in statements or summaries. I've seen this in over and over in the data-set. Example April 25 2009 -- EC only publicly confirmed what two or three tornadoes? Yet I believe I saw six in the data including an F1 in Kitchener.

I think EC simply doesn't have the time to have some drive around looking at damage.

There's been a few here in Niagara too, some even confirmed by specialists (not EC), but since it's not EC it's not in their stats.
You have to remember that for every 1 confirmed tornado by EC, there's probably 2X as many unconfirmed that have been witnessed by people, and maybe 10X as many unconfirmed that occur where there's no people. One of the reason the US has so many 'more' tornadoes than Canada is they have 10X the population, smaller area, MUCH smaller unihabited areas, and more resources to witness and confirm.

EC's list of confirmed tornadoes might make up for about 1% of actual tornadoes occurring within the country. Heck, radar doesn't even reach most of the country so they have no idea what's going on there.

My point of all this being, recorded statistics in Canada compared to actual events, are night and day from each other.

I bet there have been loads of unconfirmed/unwitnessed tornadoes in Ontario. Probably some this year too. I bet the 835 tornaodes in Ontario sicne 1792 isnt even half the amount.

Yeah, exactly. I cringe at our official annual averages of 11-14 tornadoes in Ontario per year about 60-100 tornadoes in Canada each year. Some years in Michigan and New York each state can experience 20 or more tornadoes confirmed off radar estimates in association with damage produced, etc. We don't have the funding or technology in Canada to confirm every single tornado, and really in over 200 years only about 30 tornadoes have been confirmed in Northern Ontario.

The annual averages should be heavily inflated across the board, example Ontario 30-50 and Canada 200-500 etc just to make up for the fact we can't detect or confirm all of them.

But, the list still stands, there are 885 tornadoes or so in the confirmed list 1792-2009 that I have. Considering 1918-2009 there were almost 800 tornadoes confirmed, that would dictate to about 1,700-2,000 actual tornadoes in the period from 1792-2009.

Anyway, what I was trying to say above is that EC is not releasing information statements for all the tornadoes they actually confirm. There must be 15-20 tornadoes in this data-set since 2001 where there was no public statement about their confirmation.

I bet we see at least 20 tornadoes a year in Ontario probably more. 2009 with 30 confirmed tornadoes. I bet the actual total was close to 40 mabye more for that year.
