WEATHER SUMMARY FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND THE
NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA
AT 2:14 PM EDT MONDAY 29 AUGUST 2011.

UPDATE ON ONTARIO TORNADO COUNT FOR 2011

DURING THE LAST FEW WEEKS ENVIRONMENT CANADA HAS CONTINUED TO
INVESTIGATE A SERIES OF POTENTIAL TORNADOES FROM ACROSS THE PROVINCE.
THESE INVESTIGATIONS HAVE RESULTED IN THE ADDITION OF FIVE MORE
TORNADOES TO THE TALLY FOR THIS SEASON. WITH THE ADDITION OF THESE
TORNADOES, THE TOTAL FOR THE SEASON, SO FAR, NOW STANDS AT 12.
DETAILS ON THESE ADDITIONAL TORNADOES ARE AS FOLLOWS

MONDAY, AUGUST 8 AT APPROXIMATELY 6:45 PM EDT - SOME IMAGES AND
EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS WERE CONSISTENT WITH A WEAK TORNADO OCCURRING IN
THE PLATTSVILLE AREA ABOUT 18 KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF KITCHENER.
THERE WAS NO DAMAGE REPORTED WITH THIS EVENT AND SO THIS TORNADO WAS
RATED AS A FUJITA SCALE ZERO TORNADO (PEAK WINDS UP TO 110 KM/H).

TUESDAY, AUGUST 16, LATE AFTERNOON - ENVIRONMENT CANADA ORIGINALLY
CONFIRMED A TORNADO THAT OCCURRED FROM WEST OF DRYDEN TO NORTHWEST OF
SIOUX LOOKOUT IN NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO WITH A POSSIBLE TRACK OF AROUND
80 KILOMETRES. DUE TO AN INITIAL LACK OF NOTEWORTHY DAMAGE, THIS
TORNADO WAS ORIGINALLY RATED AS A FUJITA SCALE ZERO TORNADO. FURTHER
INVESTIGATION OF THIS EVENT ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
PROVIDED BY FLY-OVERS FROM THE ONTARIO MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES
HAS RESULTED IN THIS TORNADO BEING CLASSIFIED AS TWO SEPARATE
TORNADOES SEPARATED BY A LARGE DISTANCE. THE FIRST TORNADO, IN AN
AREA WEST AND NORTH OF DRYDEN, HAD AN APPROXIMATE LENGTH OF 24
KILOMETRES AND A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF 100 METRES. IT HAS NOW BEEN RATED
AS A FUJITA SCALE ONE TORNADO (PEAK WINDS BETWEEN 120 AND 170 KM/H).
THE SECOND TORNADO OCCURRED IN AN AREA NEAR LAC SEUL APPROXIMATELY
30 KILOMETRES NORTHWEST OF SIOUX LOOKOUT. THIS TORNADO WAS ALSO
RATED AS A FUJITA SCALE ONE TORNADO AND HAD A LENGTH OF
APPROXIMATELY 12 KILOMETRES AND A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF 400 METRES. A
THIRD FUJITA SCALE ONE TORNADO OCCURRED ON THIS DAY IN THE EAR FALLS
- WENESAGA LAKE AREA ABOUT 100 KILOMETRES NORTH OF DRYDEN. IT HAD A
LENGTH OF 1 KILOMETRE AND A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF 300 METRES. A FOURTH
TORNADO WAS CONFIRMED IN THE EAR FALLS - GERRY LAKE AREA ABOUT 100
KILOMETRES NORTH OF DRYDEN. IT WAS ALSO RATED AS A FUJITA SCALE ONE
TORNADO WITH A LENGTH OF AROUND 2 KILOMETRES AND A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF
600 METRES. BASED ON WHERE THESE TORNADOES OCCURRED IN NORTHWESTERN
ONTARIO, THE FUJITA SCALE RATINGS APPLIED WERE BASED SOLELY ON TREE
DAMAGE. ANY OR ALL OF THESE TORNADOES, ESPECIALLY THE ONE TO THE
WEST OF DRYDEN, MAY HAVE BEEN RATED HIGHER IF MORE SIGNIFICANT
STRUCTURAL HAD BEEN FOUND.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 JUST AFTER 1 PM EDT - IMAGES AND EYEWITNESS
ACCOUNTS ALONG WITH AN ENVIRONMENT CANADA ON-SITE DAMAGE SURVEY
CONCLUDED THAT A FUJITA SCALE ONE TORNADO OCCURRED IN THE WESTERN
PART OF GANANOQUE. TREE DAMAGE ALONG WITH DAMAGE TO A SHED RESULTED
IN A FUJITA SCALE RATING OF ONE FOR THIS EVENT. THE TORNADO TRACK WAS
APPROXIMATELY 1.5 KILOMETRES LONG WITH A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF 60 METRES.

THE SUMMER SEVERE WEATHER SEASON IN ONTARIO NORMALLY RUNS FROM LATE
APRIL UNTIL EARLY OCTOBER. ONTARIO GETS AN AVERAGE OF 12 TORNADOES A
YEAR. ENVIRONMENT CANADA CONTINUES TO INVESTIGATE OTHER REPORTS OF
SIGNIFICANT STORMS DURING THE MONTH OF AUGUST AND WILL UPDATE THIS
SUMMARY AS REQUIRED.
