3 tornadoes confirmed from yesterday

AWCN11 CWTO 082132
Weather summary for all of Southern Ontario and the
National Capital Region issued by Environment Canada
At 5:20 P.M. EDT Thursday 8 August 2013.

…twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth tornadoes of the season

A line of severe thunderstorms developed late Wednesday afternoon
from the Arthur area to Orillia to north of Minden. These
thunderstorms tracked eastward and maintained their strength as they
passed over the Haliburton area and portions of Eastern Ontario.
Through the support of our Canwarn storm spotter network, a number of
media partners, Local Government officials and the general public,
numerous photos and videos have been provided to Environment Canada
over the last number of hours. Many of these photos and videos show
funnel clouds, waterspouts and tornadoes occuring over different
areas in southcentral Ontario. Fortunately as of late Thursday
afternoon, Environment Canada is not aware of significant damage
being caused by these storms.
An Environment Canada storm investigator travelled the area between
Arthur and Grand Valley today and confirmed that an enhanced Fujita
scale zero (ef-0) tornado moved through that area Wednesday
afternoon. The enhanced Fujita scale estimates the wind associated
with a tornado by the damage it causes and goes from zero (weakest)
to 5 (strongest). Winds in an ef-0 tornado are between 90 and 130
km/h. The tornado was 4.5 kilometres long and 100 metres wide.
With a combination of eyewitness accounts, images of localized damage
and other photographic evidence, an ef-0 tornado was confirmed in the
Orillia area. Eyewitness accounts, localized damage and photgraphic
evidence were also used to confirm a tornado in the Carnarvon area
north of Minden. This tornado has not yet been rated pending a damage
investigation that will take place on Friday.
Eyewitness and photographic evidence were also instrumental in
confirming a waterspout over head lake in the Northern Kawartha Lakes
area Wednesday afternoon. At this point it appears the waterspout
stayed over the lake and did not come onshore. If evidence comes to
light that there was a track of damage onshore from this event then
it would also be categorized as a tornado.
Environment Canada personnel continue to investigate the numerous
storms from Wednesday afternoon and evening and as new information
becomes available this statement will be updated accordingly.
In Ontario 12 tornadoes are verified on average each year. The total
for this season now stands at 14. The summer severe weather season in
Ontario normally runs from late April until early October.

Time and location event description

4:30 P.M. Orillia confirmed tornado (ef-0)

5:00 P.M. Carnarvon confirmed tornado

5:50 P.M. Arthur-Grand Valley confirmed tornado (ef-0)

6:15 P.M. head lake waterspout
