Perth County discussing warning methods

Guess county officials have been discussing tornado sirens for over a year. They even mention red alerts and how they are ineffective. I wish more was done to abolish the red alert system for tornado warnings. They better serve for non-tornadic emergencies.

What if it had hit here?

Goderich residents had minutes to scramble to safety when an F3 tornado touched down at about 4 p.m. Sunday.

The tornado, packing 300 km/h winds, killed Normand Laberge, an employee at the Sifto Salt mine, and injured 37 others. The black sky and the sound of the wind is what made many residents take shelter in a basement or hallway away from windows and doors.

In the aftermath of the storm, questions have been raised about warning systems to ensure residents have time to get to safety.

The best and fastest way to get a warning is to purchase a weather radio, said Geoff Coulson, meteorologist at Environment Canada.

"Most homes have a smoke alarm but don't have a weather radio," he said.

Isn't Goderich in Huron County? Or are they using Goderich for an example for a warning system in Perth County?
