Default Do you have, use or heed any of the following...

Do you maintain an emergency supply kit for severe weather and other emergencies?
Loosely. Past years we've thrown together a few things if trouble is on the horizon. But, this year we've put together a sizable kit that still requires more items. It's all kept in a large bin I purchased from Canadian Tire.

Do you own a NOAA weather radio, weather broadband radio or even know that Canada has a weather radio network?
In 2005 I purchased a weather broadband radio in Florida. Two years ago I purchased a NOAA Weather Radio with S.A.M.E. and have programed the unit to only sound severe tstorm/tornado watches/warnings issued for Waterloo Region. The radio is kept in the bedroom hallway incase a warning is issued when we are asleep. It acts like a weather smoke detector for us. Batteries are also used in case the power fails.

Do you take heed of the advice for severe weather/tornado warnings? I.E. proceed to secure loose objects or seek shelter in a tornado safe zone?
While tornado warnings are rare for Waterloo Region, during most instances in the last fifteen years the power has failed and we completely missed any tornado warning, or I've worked through them and never heard a peep, or I've been outside of town. I've only twice knowingly been in a tornado warning and both times was in Sarnia, Ontario. Tornado sirens are used in Lambton County and that is how we first knew of the warnings both times.

One was a false alarm and another was a confirmed event. During the confirmed event the police chief had overridden the cable network and instructed all residents to get into safe shelter as a tornado was approaching. That is the only time we've sought shelter during a tornado warning.

For severe thunderstorm warnings, if strong winds are forecast or seem probable if I'm tracking, we secure the pot plants, stack the patio chairs, etc. Two years ago 100kmh caused property damage to our backyard and since then we've taken no chances.

Now, how about you?

No but the house is stocked with all sorts of first aid.

We have a wx radio up at the cottage. One isn't needed at home as I'm always aware of any incoming storms.

Never. We'd have to spend a few hours every week locked in the basement closet during the summer months. Dozens of tornado warnings over the past years, not one tornado confirmation. Probably a dozen severe t-storm warnings each year, 'never had a problem with damage or injury. Of course, common sense plays a huge role. If there's frequent lightning or large hail, people aren't going to decide to cut their grass or go golfing (oops, I take that back about golfing... hardly a year goes by that I don't read about some golfer being struck because they decide to swing around metal rods in a thunderstorm... DOH! )

But to be fair, I'm not really one who can give a good answer for those questions because I'm always monitoring active weather as it's a huge hobby for me.

Ditto, but it's always best to play on the safe side. Our house is built on high elevation and has a bay window overlooking Kitchener and Waterloo. I always watch the storms from that window. I'm sure if there was a tornado warning, I'd be at that window as long as possible. Though, wouldn't take any chances at night.

Your location is relatively close to the KBUF radar, you'd be able to spot the rotation in a storm heading for Niagara more easily than a storm approaching Waterloo. Though, I'm really not sure if you can see rotation out this far because as I had mentioned, I've missed just about every storm event due to power loss, work or being out of town, lol.

I don't have a kit. I have lots of supplies around the house, flash lights, candles, batteries, radios, etc.

Yes

I do heed the warnings, and will move some objects if I think they will be a problem. I haven't had to seek shelter yet. If there is a good blow coming I'm usually north of town giving reports. Ya Ya I know I shouldn't.

I don't storm chase Lennon, but if I see a system coming through my area I will try and find an optimum location for viewing.

Absolutely! Food, Water, Candles, batteries (radio and flashlights)and our legal documents are in the cold cellar i.e. the bunker

bought one from Radio shack in 1984...saw the studio at the Ontario Weather Centre at the airport...I will go on later

We have a drill for those things at our household...our 'bunker" is 10 feet underground surrounded by concrete...that's the way they made the basements here...nice!

So, you let the storm come to you then find a local suitable location to view the storm from.

Is it a fallout shelter from the Cold War Era?
