==weather event discussion==

Several severe thunderstorms developed during the late afternoon of July 9th over southern Manitoba and moved into northwestern Ontario in the early evening. One of these storms spawned a significant tornado that tracked from west to east around 9:30 PM EDT (8:30 PM CDT) just south of Ear Falls which is about 60 kilometres southeast of Red Lake.

Environment Canada has been in contact with eyewitnesses to the event and has received video and still imagery of the storm. In addition an Environment Canada survey team has been at the scene since about 1 PM EDT today. Based on the evidence available the event was confirmed as a tornado and was classified as a Fujita scale 2 tornado with peak winds between 180 and 240 kilometres per hour. The Fujita scale goes from f0 (weakest) to f5 (strongest).

Damage from the tornado was significant at a fishing camp to the south of Ear Falls with 2 cabins being destroyed resulting in the death of 2 individuals 5 injuries and a person still missing. These 2 fatalities are the first deaths due to a tornado in Ontario since the bridgenorth tornado in the Peterborough area July 15th 1995Where one person lost their life.

Given that there were a number of other intense storms occurring Thursday evening Environment Canada will continue to investigate these events and will update this statement accordingly.

This tornado is the 5th confirmed tornado of the season in Ontario. There are 11 tornadoes each year in the province on average.
