Default Canwarn 2010 training dates

EDIT [Mar.31/2010] : this was forwarded to me (thanks Storm Ham!) about remaining dates for CanWarn training. I am copy/pasting it into the msg below :

Folks…please find following a reminder of the CANWARN training dates this spring across Ontario. Only change has been the addition of a training session in Napanee on Saturday, May 29th. I have still not firmed up the dates/venues for the Northwestern Ontario training sessions during the week of June 7th but hope to have that done by the middle of April. For all of you that have taken the time to send me an RSVP with your chosen training date and location…thank you…the response has been great and will go a long way towards ensuring proper seating at all of the venues. For those of you who intend to come out to a session but haven't had a chance to send me an email yet…please do so in the coming days if you get a chance. You can send your RSVP to the email address or directly to me. Based on the responses to date, this spring's sessions could be amongst the best attended ever and we are less than 2 weeks away from the first session in Windsor.

On a sadder note, CANWARN and Amateur Radio lost an energetic and tireless supporter with the passing earlier this month of Paul Chantree. Paul was a strong proponent of public safety initiatives and was an integral part of the Dufferin County CANWARN group since it's inception a number of years ago. He was well-known to a number of Environment Canada staff including CANWARN's founder Randy Mawson and Phil Chadwick, meteorologist and a dynamic CANWARN trainer for a number of years. He will be greatly missed and on behalf of everyone here at Environment Canada I wanted to express my deepest condolences to his widow, Rita.

Once again, here is the current list of training dates/venues...

Windsor - Monday, April 12th 7 PM - Caboto Club 2175 Parent Avenue

London - Tuesday, April 13th 7 PM - Four Points Sheraton Hotel 1150 Wellington Road

Hamilton - Saturday, April 17th 9 AM - Nash Auditorium, Wilcox Building, Chedoke Hospital, Sanitorium Road

Sarnia - Tuesday, April 20th 7 PM - Kinsmen Centre (Oakroom Room) 656 Lakeshore Road

Peterborough - Tuesday, April 20th 7 PM - Canadian Canoe Museum 910 Monaghan Road

Kitchener - Wednesday April 21st 7 PM - Bingemans Conference Centre - 425 Bingemans Centre Drive

Orillia - Saturday, April 24th 9 AM - Highwayman Inn - 201 Woodside Drive

Toronto - Saturday, May 1st 9 AM - Environment Canada Headquarters 4905 Dufferin St (Dufferin south of Steeles Avenue)

Cornwall - Saturday, May 1st 9 AM - Cornwall Legion 415 Second St. W.

Ottawa - Saturday, May 8th 9 AM - Kanata Legion 70 Hines Road

Sudbury - Saturday, May 15th 9:30 AM - Lionel E. Lalonde Centre 239 Montee Principale, Azilda

Sault Ste Marie - Sunday, May 16th 7 PM - Waterfront Inn - 208 St. Mary's Drive

Timmins - Monday, May 17th 7 PM - Days Inn - 14 Mountjoy St. South

North Bay - Wednesday, May 19th 7 PM - Ontario Provincial Police Communication Centre - 877 Gormanville Road

Hi Guys. I love the site. I am 14 and I am from Hamilton and i was wondering if i was old enough to become a can warn spotter? Also i was wondering if they supplied the radio (for reporting) or if i would have to by one my self. Either way i am hoping to become a spotter. Thanks. Ohh and to the people who were asking were they are being held , The one in hamilton is being heled at nash auditorium at chedoke hospital on the west mountain.

Welcome to the site! This site just switched over to a forum-based site at the end of last season, so it's just starting up in this format.

As for your question, there's a big misconception about the CanWarn training - it's NOT just for HAM radio operators. They used to be the most effective because up until not long ago, HAM radio was the only way to communicate over significant distance while mobile. But now with cell phones, mobile internet, etc.. anyone can be an effective mobile storm spotter. (and you don't have to be mobile, these training sessions are very helpful to people who call in from home).

But if you're interested in HAM radio, I can't help you any there. I have no experience with it, and very little knowledge about it.

Grab a friend and head out to a training session if you're interested in storm spotting. I only went to 1, years ago, but it was very informative.

Hello Davefootball123 as mentioned by DarKSky you don't have to be an Amateur radio operator to be a CanWarn member. However if your interested in getting your HAM license you may want to contact Fred at [email address] . He is the contact for the Hamilton Amateur Radio Club. According to the data base they meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month, 1930 (Local) at Hamilton District Christian HS, 92 Glancaster Road in Hamilton (corner of Rymal and Glancaster Roads). If you have problems making contact let me know and I will see if I can help.

I'm not sure what the setup/layout of sessions are like these days. The only one I went to was years ago, but a pen and small notebook are never a bad idea no matter where you're going

And no, you're age won't be a problem. They're happy to inform all ages.
