Discussion.

The fifth tornado of the season confirmed.

Following days of intense heat and humidity across Southern Ontario,
Mother Nature released the build-up of mugginess in the form of
heavy showers and thunderstorms Saturday. Several clusters of severe
thunderstorms caused localized heavy rainfall more reminiscent of
the tropics. Sporadic damage was also caused from local severe wind
gusts as well as one or two tornadoes.

An Environment Canada damage survey team in south Oshawa has
concluded the damage was likely caused by a downburst of strong
winds and not a tornado. Winds speeds are estimated to have reached
up to 120 km/h, which ranks as an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.
Further post-analysis of this event is likely in the coming days.

A second survey team confirmed a tornado near the southeast shore of
Lake Simcoe. Based on the damage to some buildings and trees, winds
were estimated at 150 to 175 km/h, rated EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita
scale. The same team has seen the damage in Ashburn to the north of
Whitby and is still finalizing its conclusions but suggests it is a
possible tornado. A conclusion will be forthcoming.

Yet another team found localized damage of a tented building
structure in Wellesley to be from a downburst and not a tornado.
Wind were estimated as EF-0 or around 100 km/h.

The following is a summary of weather event information received by
Environment Canada as of 5 P.M. Sunday.

1. Summary of Storm Damage for Saturday 13 August 2016:

South Oshawa - Damage to some homes and trees was reported at 2:25
P.M. likely caused by a downburst.

Sunset Beach to Port Bolster on the southeast shore of Lake Simcoe -
A confirmed tornado (and spotted at 12:50 P.M.) blew over a boat
shelter near Riverview Beach. Some other buildings and trees were
damaged from Sunset Beach to Port Bolster.

Ashburn north of Whitby - Crop and some tree damage around 2:00 P.M.

Brampton - Reports of some trees down, roof damage, shed damage
around 1:00 P.M.

Wellesley - A structure blown over with up to three people caught
inside around 6:00 P.M., suffering minor injuries. Confirmed as a
downburst.

2. Summary of Total Rainfall in millimetres:

Goderich: 78
Ottawa: 74.1
Mount Forest: 63.6
Bancroft: 59.7
Uxbridge: 56
Egbert: 47.4

Please note that this summary may contain preliminary or unofficial

Default Re: Fifth Tornado of the Season Confirmed

Yeah...I was going SB on 27 & 89 about 10 minutes before that. It was like the scene from "Twister" where Helen Hunt had the meltdown on the hill. I was expecting a boat to come crashing down ;-)
