Is it just me or does anyone else see storms - especially severe storms - becoming less frequent each year?
The last handful of years seem to have been rather slow. There's been a few good tstorms each season, but it just seems that in the past things were much more active. It's already July and there hasn't been a memorable storm here yet!

It certainly would seem that way, hell I keep hoping with every passing year since the tornadoes of 09 that it'll be a strong season, only to have them crushed every time. It seems every year since then has been really lackluster, sometimes I feel like giving up.

It is quite a dud this year. Even for the US. But thinking about the '09 - '10 years where we did have a more active weather year i though maybe there might be a correlation in weather patterns. So I did a quick Google on El-Nino and la-Nina years and look what i found:
![]() '09 was a strong El-Nino, and '10 was a strong la-Nina both years had some crazy weather, particularly in the summer times up here. I mean it's just a quick glance, but maybe some other dates correlate too? Barrie '85 was at least a moderate la~nina. This year is another weak El-Nino by this chart, and the weather is also pretty lack luster so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed for august, but i feel were gonna see a lot of systems form, then die just before the hit us.

This "systems form, then die just before they hit us" is definitely something I have noticed this year.
The one tornado we have had so far this year was apparently helped along by colder air coming off Lake Erie (according to the Weather Network). I'm not a meteorologist but I wondered about that colder February and the extent of the ice coverage on the lakes as a factor in keeping lakes colder and possibly slowing things down for us so far this year? Despite what happened with that first one. Maybe this toastier weather will get things going. |

Each year I usually have something to say about how it's been 'slow'..
we've definitely been on a quiet trend..storms either flare too late or bust..and I noticed the praries have been getting hammered the last few years. Storms that have flared up have been local..not a lot of major widespread events. There's been enough talk about it..but usually it ends up being a bust
