WEATHER SUMMARY FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND THE
NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA
AT 11:37 AM EDT THURSDAY 5 SEPTEMBER 2013.

-------------------------------------------------------------
 ==WEATHER EVENT DISCUSSION==

..18TH AND 19TH TORNADOES OF THE SEASON ADDED TO THE LIST IN
 ONTARIO..

BASED UPON VIDEO AND EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY FROM A CANWARN-TRAINED
STORM SPOTTER, ENVIRONMENT CANADA HAS CONFIRMED THE OCCURRENCE OF THE
18TH TORNADO OF THE SEASON IN ONTARIO. AT APPROXIMATELY 6:00 PM ON
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, A STORM SPOTTER REPORTED AND FILMED A TORNADO
IN A FIELD NEAR FERGUS WHICH IS ABOUT 20 KILOMETRES NORTH OF GUELPH.
SINCE NO DAMAGE WAS REPORTED WITH THIS EVENT, IT IS BEING CLASSIFIED
AS A LOW END ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE ZERO (EF0) TORNADO WITH MAXIMUM
WINDS TO 110 KILOMETRES PER HOUR.

AGAIN ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, A SECOND TORNADO WAS SPOTTED AT AROUND
6:30 PM IN A FIELD TO THE WEST OF SALEM WHICH IS ABOUT 25 KILOMETRES
TO THE NORTHWEST OF GUELPH. THE TORNADO WAS SHORT-LIVED AND AGAIN
CAUSED NO APPARENT DAMAGE. THIS EVENT CONSTITUTES THE 19TH TORNADO
OF THE YEAR AND WAS ALSO RATED AS A LOW END EF0 TORNADO WITH MAXIMUM
WINDS TO 110 KILOMETRES PER HOUR.

THE ENHANCE FUJITA SCALE, OR EF-SCALE, HAS SIX CATEGORIES WITH EF0
BEING THE WEAKEST AND EF5 BEING THE STRONGEST. ON AVERAGE, 12
TORNADOES ARE VERIFIED EACH YEAR IN ONTARIO DURING A SEASON THAT
RUNS FROM LATE APRIL UNTIL EARLY OCTOBER. WHILE THE 19 TORNADOES SO
FAR THIS YEAR IN ONTARIO ARE ABOVE THE LONG-TERM AVERAGE, MOST OF
THE EVENTS HAVE BEEN WEAK AND SHORT-LIVED.

END/OSPC
