UPDATED WEATHER SUMMARY FOR SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND THE
NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA
AT 9:39 A.M. EDT WEDNESDAY 5 AUGUST 2015.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK OF THE SUMMER OCCURRED
ON SUNDAY AUGUST 2 WHEN SEVERAL ROUNDS OF VIOLENT THUNDERSTORMS
CROSSED SOUTHERN ONTARIO IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

AN EF-2 TORNADO WAS CONFIRMED IN TEVIOTDALE SUNDAY EVENING WITH
WINDS OF 180 TO 220 KILOMETRES PER HOUR. THE DAMAGE PATH IS ROUGHLY 7
KILOMETRES LONG BY 200 METRES WIDE. TWO HOMES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY
DAMAGED WITH A ROOF REMOVED AND COLLAPSED WALLS. BARN DAMAGE, DOWNED
TREES, DOWNED POWER LINES AND DAMAGE TO CARS AT AN O.P.P. DETACHMENT
WERE ALSO REPORTED.

ANOTHER TORNADO CAUSED DAMAGE IN MARSVILLE, EAST GARAFRAXA. IT HAS
BEEN RATED EF-1 WITH WINDS OF 135 TO 175 KILOMETRES PER HOUR AND
HAVING A DAMAGE PATH OF ABOUT 2 KILOMETRES BY 500 METRES. THE DAMAGE
INCLUDED SNAPPED LARGE TREES, AN OVERTURNED FEED BARN, AND SOME
LIGHT DAMAGE TO BARNS AND A HOUSE.

THESE ARE THE THIRD AND FOURTH TORNADOES IN ONTARIO SO FAR THIS
SEASON. ON AVERAGE, THERE ARE 12 CONFIRMED TORNADOES IN ONTARIO PER
YEAR.

ENVIRONMENT CANADA SENT ANOTHER TEAM TO INVESTIGATE DAMAGE NORTH OF
AJAX IN THE UTICA AREA. THE DAMAGE THERE CONSISTED OF MINOR ROOF
DAMAGE TO A CORNER STORE, SEVERAL TREES DOWNED IN THE SAME
DIRECTION, TWO LARGE METAL SHEDS BLOWN OVER WITH THEIR ROOFS
BLOWN 100 METRES DOWNWIND, AS WELL AS DAMAGE TO AN AIRPLANE HANGAR
WHICH WAS BLOWN DOWN WITH DAMAGE TO AIRPLANES. THE INVESTIGATION
CONCLUDED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY LOW END EF-1 STRAIGHT LINE
WINDS. EF-1 WIND DAMAGE SPEEDS ARE RATED BETWEEN 135 AND 175
KILOMETRES PER HOUR.

MOST OF THE SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS WERE FROM STRAIGHT LINE WINDS,
WITH MANY REPORTS OF HAIL RANGING FROM DIME TO GOLF BALL SIZE. MANY
THOUSANDS OF HYDRO CUSTOMERS WERE WITHOUT POWER DUE TO SPORADIC
SWATHS OF DOWNED TREES ACROSS THE REGION.

THIS BULLETIN WILL BE UPDATED AS FURTHER INFORMATION BECOMES
AVAILABLE AND OTHER DAMAGE IS EXAMINED.
