Barrie is a hotbed for lake breeze convergent thunderstorms that sometimes produce short-lived weak tornadoes. You'll be in a prime location. Simcoe County has had 52 confirmed tornadoes with almost half of those probably being of the lake breeze convergent variety.

You don't have to be a photographer to take pictures of the weather. If you're willing to put out hundreds of dollars on a fancy camera...then by all means! Otherwise any digital camera or smartphone is all you'll need

I couldn't agree more. You won't be able to catch lightning on a phone camera but you'll still be able to capture cloud structure as the storms roll in and by.

And if you have a digital camera of ANY kind, most support long exposures. They might not all have BULB (any length of time) exposure, but many cheap point-and-shoots have the ability to set exposure time from 1s to 30s. If you have one that does that then you can capture lightning at night (focus on object furthest away).

thanks guys! Our new home in Barrie has more unobstructed views of the sky, than the previous one in Burlington. I have a few cheap digital cameras and I'll attempt some video/photos once the storms roll in.

Cheers!

Very slow year this year - 9 recorded tornadoes. Less than half of the 20 we had the previous year. Hopefully next season will make up for it
