Jun.18 F1 tornado at Bread Lake area summary by EC:
Code:
673
 AWCN11 CWTO 291709
WEATHER SUMMARY FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN ONTARIO AND THE
NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION ISSUED BY ENVIRONMENT CANADA
AT 1:02 PM EDT FRIDAY 29 JUNE 2012.

THIRD TORNADO OF THE SEASON IN ONTARIO CONFIRMED.

-------------------------------------------------------------
 ==WEATHER EVENT DISCUSSION==

DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS OF MONDAY, JUNE 18TH, A
SERIES OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS MOVED OVER PORTIONS OF NORTHWESTERN
ONTARIO. AERIAL PHOTOS WERE PROVIDED BY A PRIVATE PILOT IN THIS AREA
THAT SHOWED TREE DAMAGE CAUSED BY ONE OF THESE STORMS. THESE PHOTOS
WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN CONFIRMING THE EVENT AS A TORNADO. AT
APPROXIMATELY 3:30 PM EDT (2:30 PM CDT), A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM
TRACKED THROUGH THE BREAD LAKE AREA WHICH IS ABOUT 35 KILOMETRES EAST
OF SIOUX LOOKOUT. THE AERIAL PHOTOS INDICATED A PATH OF DAMAGE OF
DOWNED TREES APPROXIMATELY 1.5 KILOMETRES LONG AND ABOUT 300 METRES
WIDE AT ITS WIDEST POINT. THE NATURE OF SOME OF THE TREE DAMAGE WAS
CONSISTENT WITH THE TYPE OF DAMAGE THAT WOULD BE CAUSED BY A TORNADO
WITH SOME OF THE TREES OVERLAPPING AS THEY WERE UPROOTED. BASED ON
THIS INFORMATION, THE TORNADO WAS RATED AS A FUJITA SCALE 1 TORNADO
WITH PEAK WINDS BETWEEN 120 AND 170 KM/H. THE FUJITA SCALE IS USED TO
RATE THE INTENSITY OF DAMAGING WIND EVENTS AND TORNADOES AND GOES
FROM ZERO (THE WEAKEST) TO 5 (THE STRONGEST). ENVIRONMENT CANADA IS
CONTINUING TO INVESTIGATE THIS AREA FOR OTHER POSSIBLE TORNADOES FROM
THIS DAY AND WILL UPDATE THIS STATEMENT IF NEW INFORMATION BECOMES
 AVAILABLE.

ONTARIO HAS, ON AVERAGE, 13 TORNADOES A YEAR DURING A SEASON WHICH
RUNS FROM LATE APRIL UNTIL EARLY OCTOBER.

THIS WEATHER SUMMARY CONTAINS PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
AND MAY NOT CONSTITUTE AN OFFICIAL OR FINAL REPORT.

END/OSPC
