F3 tornado in Sask.

The tornado that ripped through a Saskatchewan First Nation on Friday was a powerful one, chewing a path half a kilometre wide and at least 45 kilometres long, Environment Canada says.

The tornado was initially rated as an F2 on the Fujita tornado damage scale, which has a maximum rating of F5.

Now it's been confirmed that for part of the time, it was an F3 tornado, which means winds speeds reached between 253 and 331 kilometres per hour.

The Prairies/most of Canada is for the most part open wilderness, or miles and miles of fields. Also, there are some serious gaps in radar coverage. For all we know, last year an F5 tornado touched down somewhere but was never reported. That, or the tornado produced no damage and was given an F0 rating.

But yes, quite rare. The tornado was on the ground for 45km, perhaps it reached F4 strength but at that moment it over over a field?

So, I'll rate this tornado F6 then. :p

Brilliant that no one was killed or seriously injured. Props to Canada!

Also to add, I can't even recall a year where so many tornadoes hit towns or cities. It was practically last year that people actually started taking photos of them in Canada.
