Weather Advisory in effect for:

Pickering - Oshawa - Southern Durham Region

Conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today for some regions near the shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Funnel clouds have been reported near Wheatley and Leamington, near the western shoreline of Lake Erie.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, watches and warnings will be issued by Environment Canada.

Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous. They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required, so stay tuned to your local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to [email address] or tweet with the hashtag #ONStorm.

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

Kaladar - Bannockburn - Bon Echo Park - Ottawa North - Kanata - Orléans - Ottawa South - Richmond - Metcalfe -
Smiths Falls - Perth - Eastern Lanark County

Updated or ended by 7:13 p.m. EDT.

At 6:23 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, dime to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

The thunderstorms are moving slowly east-northeast. There is also a slight risk that a brief tornado may be associated.

Fast moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Avoid driving through water on roads. Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. In Canada, lightning kills up to 10 people every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required, so stay tuned to your local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to [email address] or tweet with the hashtag #ONStorm.
